Lancrigg is one of those Lake District wedding venues that just seems to suit the way I like to photograph weddings.
Tucked away beneath Helm Crag in Grasmere, it feels secluded without being overly formal. There’s the old house, the barn, woodland, gardens and those unmistakable Lake District views all around you. More importantly, it’s the sort of place where people can relax, wander around, have a drink and actually enjoy the wedding rather than feeling as though they’re being moved from one thing to another all day.
And that’s pretty much perfect for documentary wedding photography.
I photographed a wedding here recently and loved how naturally the day unfolded. There was no need to turn it into a photoshoot or disappear into the hills for an hour. Most of the photographs happened exactly where the wedding was happening – people laughing, hugging, drinking, chatting and generally forgetting that I was there.
For me, that’s what Lancrigg wedding photography should be about.
A Wedding at Lancrigg in Grasmere
One of the things I love about photographing weddings in the Lake District is that you really don’t have to try too hard to make them look like Lake District weddings.
At Lancrigg, the landscape is just there.
You can see the fells beyond the grounds, woodland surrounds the venue and everything is close enough that you can make the most of the location without taking the couple away from their guests for ages.
I generally spend most of a wedding day looking for the little things rather than setting photographs up – reactions during the ceremony, people catching up over drinks, children doing their own thing, hugs, laughter and all the slightly chaotic bits that make every wedding different.
Lancrigg gives you plenty of opportunities for those sorts of photographs.
Getting Ready at Lancrigg
Having accommodation at the venue means the wedding day can start at Lancrigg itself.
From a photography point of view, I really like that.
Nobody needs to rush between hotels and venues and I can move between what’s happening without constantly putting people on a schedule.
The house also has plenty of character, which means the morning photographs still have a real sense of place. I’m not particularly interested in spending an hour arranging shoes, perfume bottles and dresses for photographs – I’d much rather photograph the people.
The nerves, the laughter, somebody trying to work out how a buttonhole works and that moment when it suddenly dawns on everyone that the wedding is actually about to happen.
Those are usually the pictures that become important.
An Outdoor Wedding Ceremony in the Lake District
If the weather plays along, an outdoor ceremony is one of the things that makes a Lancrigg wedding particularly special.
The grounds sit beneath the Grasmere fells, so you don’t need lots of decoration or elaborate backdrops. The landscape does most of the work.
During the ceremony I work as unobtrusively as possible.
I’ll photograph the obvious moments, of course – walking down the aisle, exchanging rings and the first kiss – but I’m equally interested in everything happening around those moments.
A parent trying not to cry.
A friend laughing.
Someone squeezing somebody’s hand.
The little look between the two of you that nobody else notices.
Those are the photographs that tell you what the wedding actually felt like.
And if the Lake District weather decides not to cooperate, that really isn’t a disaster either.
Rain, mist and dramatic skies can actually make this part of Cumbria look even better.
Drinks, Hugs and Everything In Between
The period immediately after the ceremony is probably one of my favourite parts of any wedding day.
Everybody relaxes.
There are drinks being poured, people hugging each other, old friends catching up and usually quite a lot going on at once.
I don’t want to interrupt that by immediately taking the couple away for photographs.
Instead, I’ll normally stay amongst the guests and photograph what’s happening.
Lancrigg works particularly well for this because people can spill out around the house, barn and grounds rather than everybody being confined to one room.
These are often some of the most natural photographs from the entire wedding.
Couple Photographs at Lancrigg
Yes, I take couple photographs.
No, you don’t have to disappear with me for an hour.
My approach is normally to find ten or fifteen minutes somewhere in the day when the light looks good and go for a wander.
Lancrigg makes that very easy.
You’ve got woodland, open countryside and views towards the fells within a short walk of the wedding itself. It means we can make photographs that really show where you got married without turning the day into an extended portrait session.
I keep direction fairly minimal.
I’ll put you somewhere with good light, perhaps give you a little bit of guidance if you need it and then let you be yourselves.
If you’re the sort of people who think you’re awkward in photographs, that’s completely fine. Most of the couples I photograph tell me exactly the same thing.
My Favourite Places for Wedding Photographs at Lancrigg
One of the advantages of photographing a wedding at Lancrigg is the variety you get without having to travel anywhere.
The Woodland
The woodland gives you something completely different from the big Lake District views. It’s quieter, more intimate and particularly good if the light outside is harsh.
It’s also perfect for a short walk rather than a formal portrait session.
The Grounds and Fell Views
You don’t need to hike to the top of Helm Crag to prove you got married in the Lake District.
The views surrounding Lancrigg give plenty of context and I much prefer incorporating the landscape naturally rather than turning the couple into tiny figures halfway up a mountain.
If the light is particularly good later in the day, we can always nip outside again for five minutes.
Around the House
The house gives the photographs some contrast with the surrounding landscape.
There’s character, interesting light and plenty of places where photographs can happen naturally throughout the day rather than everything needing to be staged outside.
Around the Barn
Later in the day, the barn and courtyard become part of the story.
Guests move between spaces, the light changes and the wedding starts to become a little less orderly – which generally means more interesting photographs.
Wedding Speeches and the Barn
The barn gives the later part of a Lancrigg wedding a completely different feel from the ceremony and drinks outside.
By this point in the day, people have usually forgotten about me altogether.
That’s exactly where I want to be.
During speeches I’m watching the people listening just as much as the person speaking.
Quite often the best photograph isn’t the person telling the embarrassing story – it’s the horrified reaction from somebody three tables away.
It’s the same once the evening starts.
I want the dance floor, the chaos, the questionable dancing and everything else that actually happened rather than a sanitised version of the wedding.
What If It Rains at Lancrigg?
It is the Lake District.
There is a reasonable possibility it might rain.
I wouldn’t worry about it.
The best wedding photographs aren’t dependent on blue skies and golden-hour sunlight. Lancrigg has indoor and covered spaces and the house and barn give us plenty to work with if the weather turns.
And if you’re happy to venture outside for a few minutes, rain and mist can look fantastic in photographs.
My advice is not to build the entire wedding around a weather forecast.
Have a wet-weather plan and then enjoy the day you’ve actually got.
A Photographer’s Tips for Getting Married at Lancrigg
Don’t schedule too much time for photographs
You really don’t need to.
I’d much rather photograph you enjoying your wedding and borrow you for ten minutes when the conditions are right.
Leave some space in the timetable
Not every minute needs an activity.
Some of my favourite photographs happen in the gaps when nobody is supposed to be doing anything.
Don’t worry too much about the weather
Changing weather is part of getting married in the Lake District.
Cloud, mist and even rain can add atmosphere. If we get beautiful evening light as well, that’s a bonus.
Spend time with your guests
This sounds obvious, but it’s worth saying.
You invited all these people because you actually like them. Enjoy being with them. The more you’re involved in your wedding rather than worrying about the photographs, the better the photographs tend to be.
